The test conforms to the highest international standards of language skills assessment and is designed to assess the language skills of candidates who wish to study or work in countries where English is the language of communication.

What IELTS is

IELTS is recognised all over the world. It is accepted by educational institutions in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and in European neighbours such as Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and Belgium, as well as many other countries as proof of the required language skills. Additionally, over 2,500 university institutions in the USA also recognise IELTS scores for admission purposes, including all the Ivy League colleges. Many other organisations around the world use IELTS scores for a range of purposes, such as immigration, recruitment, professional registration and entry to training courses.

In Greece, leading educational institutions, professional organisations, private sector employers and government agencies, including ASEP, recognise IELTS scores as a valid and trusted proof of English knowledge.

What it tests

IELTS assesses your ability to use English in real-world situations. The subjects reflect the situations you could find yourself in, such as taking lecture notes as a student or trying to get your heating fixed quickly to face British winter.

The test covers all four language skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking) and is offered in two test formats: Academic and General Training.

All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking Modules, while Reading and Writing are offered as Academic or General Training Modules.

When exams take place

You can take the IELTS exam in Athens and Thessaloniki twice a month throughout the year. IELTS exams are also conducted in other towns throughout Greece on specified dates.

How evaluation is done

The Academic Modules assess whether a candidate is ready to study or train in English at an undergraduate or postgraduate level.

The General Training Modules emphasise communication in a broad social and educational context and are designed for candidates who plan to work, live or study at a secondary or vocational level in an English-speaking environment.

Candidates receive scores for each of the four language skills, but there is also an Overall Score. They are assessed on a Scale from 1 (Non User) to 9 (Expert User).
